Lymphedema

Lymphedema is swelling of an area of the body which is caused by damage to the lymphedema system.  This is most frequently caused by surgery in which lymph nodes are removed.  Radiation over lymph node areas can also cause lymphedema.  Other causes can be due to accidents, surgeries, or in some cases a person can be born with lymphedema (primary lymphedema).

Lymphedema treatments should be provided by therapists who are certified in lymphedema management.  Marilyn Nishi-Gormely, PT is certified in the LeDuc method of lymphedema therapy.  This treatment is highly recognized and researched and proven to be effective.

Manual lymph drainage is a gentle, specialized technique which empties lymph nodes and stimulates the lymph system to work.  The patient may also need multi-layer bandaging to decrease the size of the limb.  Once the size of the limb is reduced, measurements are taken for a good fitting compression sleeve or stocking, which must be worn daily in order to prevent an increase in size.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition, and must be managed in order to prevent it from progressing.   It can be controlled by regular self-treatment and prevention, which is taught to the patient.  Mild exercising is recommended, but the patient must avoid over-exertion and repetitive exercise.

This is an example of multi-layer bandaging of the leg.  The certified physical therapist applies manual lymph drainage, followed by bandaging, which is worn until the next day.  Significant reduction in swelling is achieved by these techniques.
