Gait Abnormalities
The physical therapy evaluation will determine why a patient is limping, has an uneven or uncoordinated walking pattern. Weakness, poor posture, stiffness, joint problems, poor balance, foot pronation, pain and other reasons can cause gait problems. The physical therapist will set up a rehabilitation program to improve gait, based on the evaluation findings.
Specific treatments to improve gait include; hip strengthening, core strengthening, posture training, exercises for foot, ankle, and/or knee. These include making sure the alignment of the hip/knee/ankle is correct. Stiff joints also need to be treated, and the correct stretching exercises are given to target those areas.
The hip abductor muscles are important to maintaining balance and a normal gait. Specific training to increase hip abductor strength will be given.
